What a successful two weekends it has been for NLSC Junior sailors.

On the weekend 7/8 March the Heron Junior NSW State Championships were held at Concord Ryde Sailing Club.

Two races on the Saturday in light fickle breeze were followed by four races on the Sunday in a well established 10-15 knot wind with occasional gusts of up to 18 knots. The two Divisions, Junior/Junior and Junior/Senior were hotly contested.

NLSC Juniors achieved first and second places on scratch and a third place on handicap in the Junior/Junior division with a third on scratch and a second on handicap in the Junior/Senior Division.

Well done to all the junior sailors competing!

You may well think that after a hectic week end of sailing they may have wanted to rest but the following Sunday 15 March many were back on the waters on Narrabeen Lake competing in the Sabot Zone Regatta.

30 young sailors competed in two divisions from Sailing Clubs around Sydney with 8 from NLSC.

Conditions were challenging with wind from the north east ranging from 5 knots in the morning up to 15 knots in the afternoon.

NLSC sailors manages to achieve:

Overall winner in the open class

Overall second in the Transition fleet

Second on handicap in transition fleet

First Spark Sail in Transition fleet.

Most sailors managed to complete all their races but with many capsizes our rescue boats were kept busy. Even so all the competitors greatly enjoyed themselves.

Despite operating without a permanent building and with quite trying conditions our NLSC Junior sailors have performed very well this season with the guidance of their instructors and coaches.

Narrabeen Lake is an ideal waterway for learning and practice with no tidal influence, no large boats, limited waves and the safety of the shore being very close in every direction. The Club has experienced increase numbers of juniors and despite the timeline for the provision of a permanent home (mid 2028) we expect this trend to continue.

Narrabeen Lakes Sailing Club Update

December 6, 2021
What a week it has been. From the lowest of lows last weekend when we got the heart breaking news of the fire, to the highest of highs seeing all our sailors back on the water with huge smiles on their faces yesterday.

We are incredibly humbled by the support of the whole community and have raised over $23k to date to help get the club back on its feet. More is needed so please continue to share and dig deep: asf.org.au/projects/narrabeen-lakes-sailing-club

In an amazing display of solidarity we got dozens of boats on the water yesterday and got all of our junior sailors out in a variety of boats. From practice tacking on the beach, first solo sails in Optis and crewing experience in Herons there were ear to ear smiles all round despite the overcast weather.

Thank you, thank you, thank you … to our committee who brought gazebos and BBQs, our members who shuttled various boats to and from the club and gave them willingly to our junior sailors to learn in, to our Head Instructor for manning our RIB (the only remaining club asset) and also running afternoon racing, for all the parents who brought the kids down and to those who fed us with baked treats, to the instructors who gave it their all with the kids in the morning, and finally to the broader community who all stopped to say hello and show their support.

We are more than our clubhouse, we are a club, a team of passionate people who give unconditionally for the greater good. We’ve hit our lowest in the last week, but we are far from out, and watching this weekend’s passion brought tears to your eyes. We will be stronger than ever as we come out of this.
