After a fierce day of competition, surf lifesaving athletes aged 14 and above have battled it out on the beach and in the water with Newport SLSC leading the overall pointscore ahead of Manly LSC and North Cronulla SLSC at the conclusion of Day Two.
Once again, near perfect conditions saw over 2500 athletes participate in a range of team and individual events from boat relays to beach relays and everything in between.
Day Two was all about the team events and Newport certainly put their stamp on things winning the Open Male Single Ski Relay, Open Male Board Relay, U17 Male Taplin Relay, U17 Male Board Relay, U19 Male Surf Team, U19 Male Board Rescue, U19 Male Rescue Tube Rescue, U19 Male Taplin Relay, U19 Male Board Relay, U19 Mixed Single Ski Relay and U19 Mixed Surf Belt.18 year old Bodi Smith (Newport), who also won two individual gold medals in the Open and U19 Board Riding events explained that the Newport club came in with a real plan.
"As a club we all have talked about our goal of finishing in the Top 3 at State and in the Top 5 at Aussies this year. We've got a new gym, a team bus and there's so much positive energy around the club at the moment," said Bodi.
Twilight beach competition took place from 3.30pm with thousands of spectators lined up along the beach track cheering on their respective clubs. However no one could look past 15 year old Jessica Thornton of Coogee SLSC who secured gold in the Open and U17 Female Beach Sprints.
Jessica, who will attempt to qualify for Australia at the Youth Olympics, was ecstatic with her dominant win in both events.
"To win that Opens race against these girls is a real boost of confidence for me. I'm a track girl and rarely train on the sand so I was pretty nervous going into the final but over the moon with the result," said Jessica.
Tomorrow will conclude the NSW Surf Life Saving Open Championships with a range of individual events including the prestigious Ironman and Ironwoman and traditional March Past as well as board, ski and flag races.
