Wakehurst Parkway Improvements September 2026 Works Notification

The NSW government is delivering improvements to Wakehurst Parkway between Frenchs Forest and Narrabeen focusing on safety and capacity for this key link in Sydney’s northern neaches.

What work are we doing?

In September, we're continuing work on Wakehurst Parkway, between Trefoil Creek and Oxford Falls Road.

Key work activities include:

  • Rock breaking and stabilisation work
  • Earthworks
  • Utility work
  • Drainage work

When and where we’ll be working

We’ll be working along Wakehurst Parkway between Trefoil Creek and Oxford Falls Road during and outside of standard hours.

Our standard working hours are Monday to Friday 7am to 6pm and 8am to 1pm on Saturday.

Our out-of-hours are between 8pm and 6am.

To complete rock breaking activities near Oxford Falls Road west, there will be some noisy work completed after midnight. Nearby residents will be contacted in advance of work taking place.

Rock wall work to begin

To widen Wakehurst Parkway near the Oxford Falls Road intersection, we will need to cut into the existing hillside on the southbound side of the road, where a small rock wall is currently located. The work will involve extending and enlarging the sandstone retaining wall to approximately 230 metres in length and up to 4.4 metres in height. The finished wall will be designed to blend with the surrounding environment and have a similar appearance to the existing sandstone rock faces along Wakehurst Parkway.

Where the rock face needs extra support, we’ll use rock bolts and shotcrete - a technique where steel bars are inserted into drilled holes and concrete is sprayed directly onto the surface at high pressure to stabilise rock batters. Any shotcrete used will be carefully colour and texture-matched so it blends naturally with the surrounding sandstone.

Additionally, the sandstone removed during this work won’t go to waste! We’re looking at opportunities to crush and process it as fill material to be re-used within the project itself, keeping it out of landfill and putting it back to work.

Before: Wakehurst parkway and Oxford Falls Road prior to construction

After: Indicative render of Wakehurst Parkway and Oxford Falls Road showing the upgraded intersection and rock wall once complete

Salvaging the endangered Angus’s Onion Orchid

Microtis angusii, commonly known as the ‘Angus’s Onion Orchid’, is a threatened flora species only found in a small number of locations on the northern beaches of Sydney. It has a single hollow, onion-like leaf and up to sixty small, crowded green flowers.

As part of the project, we've encountered the Angus Onion Orchid near Oxford Falls Road and have worked with Flora Ecologists to salvage this species before construction in the area starts. Learn how the project team have worked to salvage the species and donated the orchids to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Mount Annan.

Our equipment

Work will involve the use of the following machinery and equipment:

  • Delivery vehicles (heavy vehicles, light vehicles and ‘pick and carry’ cranes)
  • Earthworks machinery (excavator, profiler, roller, grader, tipper, vacuum truck)

What will this mean for you?

While we carry out this work, you may notice:

  • Workers and vehicles moving around the site
  • Traffic controllers and signage directing road users
  • Temporary lane closures and reduced speed limits during and outside of standard hours
  • Noise from machinery and equipment.

Managing our impacts

Some work activities will require the use of machinery which generate noise, light and vibration. We’ll implement the following controls to minimise the impact to the community and environment:

We will also:

  • Use non-tonal reversing beepers
  • Manage dust by watering down exposed areas during earthworks
  • Minimise light spill through targeted lighting
  • Complete oversize deliveries later at night when traffic volumes are lower
  • Keep affected residents and businesses informed ahead of higher-impact activities
