Procurement begins for Mona Vale Road West upgrade: Have Your Say on Updated Design

An updated design for the Mona Vale Road West upgrade has been released and construction procurement is underway, bringing the project a step closer to improving safety, traffic flow and travel reliability in Pittwater.

The Mona Vale Road West upgrade is taking a major step forward, with an updated design now being prepared following community and stakeholder feedback.

Construction procurement for the project is also now underway, with expressions of interest seeking construction contractors issued last week.

The project will build a better road corridor and plug a key missing link in the Northern Beaches, widening Mona Vale Road from two lanes to four lanes between McCarrs Creek Road and Powderworks Road, helping improve traffic flow, reliability and reduce travel times for thousands of motorists each day.

A new Review of Environmental Factors (REF) is being prepared to assess the updated design. The new REF will also outline potential impacts of the project and the measures proposed to avoid, minimise and manage them. The old REF, commenced by the previous government, was no longer fit-for-purpose given the significant improvements in design which have occurred to-date.

Key improvements refined as part of the updated design, include:

McCarrs Creek Road intersection - A new signalised intersection and roundabout will improve safety, reduce delays and make it easier for motorists.

Fauna overpass east of Kimbriki Road - A dedicated wildlife crossing will provide safer passage for native animals and strengthen habitat connections across the corridor.

Tumburra Street access changes - Safer left-in, left-out movements and a new local road connection will improve safety for motorists and nearby residents.

Wirreanda Road underpass - The proposed underpass will replace right-in and right-out movements at Tumburra Street, which improves safety and local access to the area.

Harvey Road Extension - As part of the updated design and in response to community feedback, the Harvey Road Extension will not proceed.

''The updated design directly reflects the priorities raised during community consultation, including by the Member for Pittwater, such as better bus stop locations for safer public transport, new and improved walking and cycling links, enhanced wildlife and environmental outcomes and reduced impacts on private properties, including school plans for sporting fields. '' the government said on Tuesday

The community is invited to provide feedback on the updated design as Transport for NSW finalises the new Review of Environmental Factors.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, the Hon. Catherine King, stated:

“Mona Vale Road is a critical link between the Northern Beaches and the North Shore, and it’s the Albanese and Minns Labor Governments that are funding and delivering the long-awaited widening.

“The final design will finally address the traffic pinch points between Terrey Hills and Ingleside that drivers currently face each day, and we encourage everyone to have their say.”

NSW Minister for Roads, the Hon. Jenny Aitchison, said:

“We're delivering a better, safer Mona Vale Road that reflects what we've heard from the community while improving travel for the thousands of people who rely on this route.

“This updated design strikes the right balance between improving traffic flow, strengthening safety and protecting the local environment - all of which are important to locals.  

“We're encouraging the community to have another look at the updated design and share their feedback as we take the next step toward delivering this important upgrade.”

“After a 60-year rollercoaster ride of hopes and broken promises, Pittwater welcomes an accelerated timeline for the construction of Mona Vale Road West.  

“The Minister and Transport for NSW have listened to key stakeholder concerns and updated plans accordingly. It’s now time for our whole community to have their say.

“Today's announcement that an EOl for the construction contract has been released is the breaking news our community has been waiting for to finally get this critical road done.”

I’ve worked closely with Pittwater State MP Jacqui Scruby and both the Federal and NSW Governments to keep this project on track. Improving safety and reducing congestion on Mona Vale Road has consistently been one of the biggest priorities raised by our community.

The updated design includes improvements locals have been calling for, including safer local access, better walking and cycling connections, and improved wildlife crossings.

Mona Vale Road is a vital link in and out of Mackellar, carrying thousands of commuters every day. Delivering this upgrade means safer journeys, more reliable travel times, and a better outcome for the surrounding environment.

Procurement is currently underway and pending planning approvals, it is anticipated construction will start in 2027.

What's Changed: 

Mona Vale Road

Widening Mona Vale Road between McCarrs Creek Road and Powderworks road from two lanes to four lanes with a central concrete safety barrier. Benefits: Improve traffic flow and efficiency. Improve safety for all road users by improving road alignment and widening shoulders.

McCarrs Creek Road

Upgrade and realignment of McCarrs Creek Road /Mona Vale Road Intersection. Benefits: Reflect feedback from 2017 public display. Improve safety and access to local road network. Improve walking and cycling connections to/from Terrey Hills.  Improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists along Mona Vale road.

Kimbriki Intersection

New Traffic signal intersection including additional turning lanes and a truck climbing lane. Benefits: Improve access and safety.

Addison Road

Closing the existing intersection at Addison road with no exist from Addison road to Mona Vale Road. All vehicles to exit Ingleside via Tumburra Street or new Wirreanda Street underpass. Benefits: Improve motorist safety by removing an unsafe movement at Mona vale road

Wirreanda Road underpass

The proposed underpass would provide a direct connection between Wirreanda Road and Mona Vale Road. In conjunction with the underpass, Wirreanda Road would be upgraded between the underpass and Tumburra Street to accommodate the proposed connection. Benefits:  Would facilitate a safer and more efficient route for local traffic while reducing interruptions to through traffic. This change is intended to replace right-in and right-out movements at Tumburra Street, which improves safety and local access to the area.

Tumburra Street

Relocating the intersection with Tumburra Street west by about 40 metres and changing access to left turn in and out of Tumburra Street. Benefits: Improve local access and safety.

Powderworks Road Intersection

Access to Bahai temple way widened and adjusted to align with design for Powderworks road. Increasing the size and capacity of the intersection. Benefits: Reduce private property impacts. Provide safe and convenient access to Bahai Temple.

Fauna Underpass

Revisiting the design of the fauna crossing to reduce impacts on the National Park.
