FINALISTS SHINE IN TRICKY CONDITIONS AT THE 2017 HIF NSW SURFMASTERS PRES. BY MOBYS.

Sunday, 18 June 2017: by Surfing NSW
The HIF NSW Surfmasters Titles presented by Moby's Beachside Retreat saw four new NSW shortboard champions crowned after a day of difficult windswept conditions at North Boomerang Beach.

After finishing third in the Over-35 Mens in 2014 and 2016, Jeremy Cohen (Macmasters Beach) was able to go a few spots higher to take out the division in the constantly shifting peaks. Cohen played a patient game over the duration of the final, only catching four waves but managing to post a respectable heat total of 12.26 (out of a possible 20 points) to take a narrow victory over Mitch Dawkins (Nelson Bay), Cameron Sharpe (Shelly Beach) and Jay Phillips (Fingal) who claimed second, third and fourth respectively, by less than a one-point margin.

After falling one spot short of the win in the Over-35 Men’s division, Mitch Dawkins (Nelson Bay) managed to get himself into the winner's chair in the Over-40 Men’s division, posting a heat total of 12.57. Dawkins saved his best performance for last in the final, jagging his second scoring wave in the final minutes of the heat to get the edge over fellow dual finalist Cameron Sharpe (Shelly Beach) who held down the lead for the majority of the final.

In what was another tight final between multi-division finalists, Scott Schindler (Sawtell) found form in the junky conditions to claim the Over-45 Men’s title. Schindler took a solid portion of the final to find form, only posting small scores until the final minutes when he found a much needed 7.17 wave score to give him an edge against fellow event standout Robbie Page (Verges Creek) who finished the heat in second position.

Page managed to go one step further and claim a title in the Over-50 Mens, dominating the lineup with an impressive 16.33 heat total. Page appeared to be on-song over the duration of the event, rarely falling and making light work of tricky sections. As a result of the aforementioned score, Page’s fellow competitors were left chasing a combination of scores to take away his lead.

by Surfing NSW
The HIF NSW Surfmasters Titles presented by Moby's Beachside Retreat saw a day of event eliminations as competitors scrapped to seal a position into tomorrow’s final rounds.

Accustomed to the long right-handers of Northern NSW, Jay Phillips (Fingal) had little dramas changing direction and nailing the punchy lefts of Boomerang Beach. Phillips nailed an array of mammoth backside snaps to post a near perfect 9.17 wave score in the Over-35 Men’s division and move back into the quarterfinals.

Despite being knocked from the event in the second Over-45 Men’s requal round, Jay Sharp (Long Jetty) smashed out one of the rides of the event in his first heat, posting a giant 9.27 wave score. Sharp nailed a succession of critical backside turns to notch up the total.

Scott Schindler (Sawtell) used his lightening fast backhand attack to post the highest heat total of the event, 17.84 (out of a possible 20 points) in the Over-45 Men’s requalification round. Schindler’s total scoreline consisted of a near perfect 9.67 wave, which rocketed him back into the main round of competition.

Shelly Beach duo, Marcus Davidson (Shelly Beach) and Cameron Sharpe (Shelly Beach) both put on solid performances in the Over-40 and Over-35 Men’s division with both surfers posting heat totals in excess of 15.66 points. Both surfers will make their next appearance in the quarter and semi-finals.

The HIF NSW Surfmasters Titles presented by Moby's Beachside Retreat continued to steamroll through heats today in pristine conditions with competitors eager to bypass the do-or-die requalification rounds.

1988 Pipeline Masters Champion and multiple Australian Indigenous Title holder Robbie Page (Verges Creek) put on a dominant display of powerful rail surfing in the Over-45 Men’s division, to post the highest heat total of the event so far, 17.00 (out of a possible 20 points). Page proceeded to back up the stellar heat total, notching up a 15.33 total in the Over-50 Men's divisions for an eclectic mix of giant forehand turns. As a result sealed himself into the quarterfinals in both aforementioned divisions.

Using his trademark flow, former Australian Champion Glenn Pringle (Cronulla) posted an impressive 16.06 heat total to claim his opening Over-45 Men’s heat and cement his position straight into the quarterfinals.

Fellow Cronulla ripper, Ricky Marshall (Cronulla) joined Pringle in the winners circle posting a 14.67 heat total his Over-40 Men’s round one heat. Marshall knocked out a chain of giant backside hits to post the score and book himself a position into the quarterfinals.

Donohoe managed to gain the upper hand in the second heat, notching up an impressive 15.03 heat total (out of a possible 20 points) to take top honours ahead of Bartz and Samantha Oakes (Carlton) who claimed second and third respectively.

Thanks to a solid display of traditional turns, Carl Musker (Collaroy Plateau) managed to claim the Single Fin division. Musker blew up in the throaty conditions, drawing out his turns to get the nod ahead of Michael Crisp (Ballina), Rob Hazelwood (Narrabeen) and Jamie Doran (Anna Bay) who claimed the remaining three spots.

Neil Cameron (Byron Bay) managed to add another title to his mantelpiece, claiming the Over-60 Men's division. The former NSW and Australian Champion, effortlessly linked together a chain of turns to post a heat total of 13.5 to take the top spot on the dais and earn a spot into the NSW team for the upcoming Australian Surf Festival.

Rod Baldwin (Copacabana) blew away his opposition to take out the Over-55 Men's final. The multiple Australian Title holder put his opposition into a combination situation after posting a near perfect 9.77 wave score. Runner-up Dean Shaw (Fingal Bay) put up a valiant effort, clawing his way out of the combination situation, posting a solid 8.33 but ultimately had to settle for second place.
