BYRA's Boatbuilding Program has been won the 2026 NSW and ACT Australian Sailing Innovation Award. Delivered by experienced BYRA mentors and supervisors, the BYRA Boatbuilding Program has shared knowledge on workshop safety procedures, PPE requirements and safe tool systems, and has been an inclusive and supportive learning environment for those who took part.
The NSW-ACT Sailing Awards were announced Saturday evening, September 19, at a gala celebration at Sydney's Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. Winners in the State Awards progress to the National Awards.
The National Australian Sailing Award winners will be announced at the 2026 Australian Sailing Awards and Hall of Fame Inductions Gala Dinner at the Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour on Friday 30 October.
The BYRA Boatbuilding Program win caps off a brilliant week for BYRA. Last Sunday, September 13, the home of sailing at Bayview held their Opening of the Sailing Season with the launch of the BYRA Boatbuilding Program's Northbridge Juniors that have been built over Winter.

The Northbridge Junior is a purpose-designed junior sailing dinghy created to introduce young sailors to the sport in a safe, simple, and engaging way. It is stable and practical for junior training, simple to rig and maintain, designed specifically for learning and ideal as a stepping stone into club sailing and racing.
In announcing the winner of the Innovation Award for 2026 the judges stated:
''BYRA’s Northbridge Junior Boatbuilding Program is an innovative initiative that combines boatbuilding, STEM education, practical trade skills and sailing into a unique participation pathway. Participants build their own dinghy before participating in club Discover Sailing Programs and progressing into racing. The program creates affordable boat ownership while fostering skills, confidence and lifelong connections within the sailing community. By bringing together experienced volunteers, young sailors and their families, it strengthens intergenerational knowledge transfer and creates a sustainable pathway from building boats to becoming active, lifelong participants in sailing.''

Introducing BYRA’s Youth Timber Boat Building Program

Many of us growing up in the 60’s and 70’s were introduced to sailing by building our own timber boats in our garages with our parents, offering an affordable entry point to the sport. Sadly, the skills we learnt through building and maintaining our boats have been largely lost to later generations with the availability of fibreglass moulded boats ready to go off the dealer’s floor. We also recognise that not everyone comes from a sailing family and not every family has the space at home to build a boat. In short, we recognise that times change and we need to change with them.
Enter the BYRA Youth Timber Boat Building program, designed as a pathway for young non-sailors into the sport. There is no programme fee. Yes, you read that correctly – all we ask is a commitment to join as a family for three years and to fully embrace the programme, which runs on Sundays throughout the winter. At the end of the programme, participants will have built their own boat, learned how to sail it, and, more importantly, made new friends and gained skills for life – parents as well!
The focus is on creating a genuine passion for sailing. The programme fosters teamwork, co-operation, responsibility and earned trust.
The boats we are building are Northbridge Juniors, an 8-foot-long scow design dinghy, much like a mini scow moth. Northbridge Juniors were originally designed by Frank Bethwaite in the early 1960s. Frank is well known in yachting circles, being involved in the design of the Tasar, Laser 2, and the 49er.
The Northbridge Junior is ideal for our programme, being a purpose-designed junior sailing dinghy. It is stable and practical for junior training, with forgiving handling, and the self-draining cockpit and low freeboard make recovery after a capsize much easier. The simple rig allows focus on sailing skills development. It is a perfect stepping stone into club sailing and racing and a perfect first boat.
The boats are relatively easy and quick to build. Construction is of 4mm Gaboon ply skins and frames, with Paulownia internal timbers. Internal frames come pre-cut using a CNC machine. Essentially, it’s like putting together a big model. The boats are light, with a hull weight of only 8 kg, making them readily transportable and easy for kids to move about on shore, yet still incredibly strong. Our Northbridge Juniors have also been slightly modified from the original design to allow for the addition of aluminium wing bars as the skippers get older, and before they move into larger boats.
The boat-building programme is led by our BYRA Rear Commodore, Shane Greaves, who is both a professional boat builder and Programme Manager of the Making Waves Foundation ‘Wright of Passage’ programme. Shane is also our AS-accredited sailing instructor.
Each programme participant is guided by Shane and a team of BYRA volunteers. We currently have seven boats being built by children aged between 6 and 13, but there is still limited opportunity for more participants to get involved.
The kids are not just spectators; they are actively involved in the building of their own boats with assistance from their parents. Each step and the use of all tools is demonstrated, then the kids take over. They know and respect that they have been trusted to use saws, chisels, planes, staple guns, multi-tools, etc., safely and correctly. While it was a little scary to watch them for the first time (!), they have all proved just how much they have listened to ensure they all stay safe.
Upon completion of their boat, they get to paint it in the colour of their choice, name it, and learn to sail it. Most importantly, they get to keep it as their own boat.
Getting to keep their own boats is an important part of the programme. From day one, each kid cut their frames from the pre-cut CNC sheet and wrote their name on each piece. This gave instant ownership. Each child understood that this was their boat, and their commitment to the build was instantaneous. The pride in what they are achieving is evident. It is a joy to watch, and the volunteers are thoroughly enjoying it.
This pathway provides a very affordable entry into sailing. The family membership also provides the whole family with access to BYRA, including SUPs, kayaks, and, more importantly, friendly peers they can enjoy their new water bound adventures with.
The programme commenced in mid-May and will run for 16 Sundays. However, the build time will be less than that, giving families the flexibility to miss some weeks for holidays or family commitments.
The build is taking place in our boatshed and adjacent Riddle Reserve at BYRA clubhouse, 1842 Pittwater Road, Bayview. People are welcome to stop by any time for a viewing (from a safe distance!).
The build has been made possible with the help of a grant through the NSW Government’s Local Sport Grant Programme and through funds raised through BYRA’s annual Peter Loft Marathon event. We also thank our sponsors, Resene Paints, Sector 7G Sailing Sails, and Aroona Masts.
I think there is nothing like the sense of achievement and pride that comes from building your own boat. Starting with sheets of plywood and lengths of timber and finishing with a beautifully presented, rigged boat – seeing it float for the first time is a special moment. There is no doubt that the effort and pride in the build means that these kids will respect their boats and look after them. We are really looking forward to our launch date, scheduled for Sunday 13th September.

Bayview Yacht Racing Association (BYRA) is a volunteer-run community sailing and aquatic club based in Bayview on the southern shores of Pittwater.
Established in 1949, the club has a proud history of producing World Champion Sailors, including Emmett Lazich, Mark Thorpe, Rob Brewer, Steve and Stuart Shimeld in Moths, and Brett Beyer in Lasers.

However, like many grassroots sailing clubs, BYRA has faced difficulties in recent years attracting and retaining young members due to competition from a broad range of other sporting activities. Under Victor’s expert guidance and support, Australian sailors James Mayo and Ben Lamb delivered world-class performances over the past year, culminating in the 2026 Etchells World Championship title against a fleet of 72 boats from 12 nations. Remarkably, they achieved consistent podium results across four major regattas while sailing with a different skipper at each event. Victor’s ability to build adaptable, high-performing teams and prepare athletes for success in any circumstances exemplifies world-class coaching excellence.
2026 NSW & ACT - Instructor of the Year - Scott Reynolds
The judges stated:
Scott has introduced and supported thousands of people to sailing through the Saltwater Veterans Sailing Project, and many other Discover Sailing Centres across Australia. Having experienced progression through the Discover Sailing pathway first-hand after being introduced to sailing 10 years ago, Scott understands the needs of adults learning sailing later in life, and particularly veterans and participants navigating rehabilitation, confidence rebuilding and social connection.
Scott’s focus is not only on teaching sailing skills, but on creating pathways for lifelong participation, including training, racing, volunteering and Instructor development. Congratulations Scott on your outstanding leadership and commitment to inclusive sailing.
2026 NSW & ACT Official of the Year - Evan McHugh

Evan’s professionalism, judgement and race management expertise have supported major events across Australia. As a qualified National Race Officer, Regional Judge, and experienced Safety Boat Operator, Evan is a dependable race official who strives to ensure racing is fair, consistent and safe for competitors. He has been involved with significant events including Sail Port Stephens as a Protest Committee member and on-water official, Race Officer for various club annual regattas and class association events, as well as playing an instrumental role in the delivery of Zhik Youth Sail NSW in 2025. Congratulations Evan on this well-deserved recognition!
2026 NSW & ACT Sport Promotion Award - Sail Port Stephens
The judges stated:
Sail Port Stephens has become one of Australia’s leading sailing events, bringing together sailors from every corner of the sport, including grand-prix racers, cruising yachts, trailer boats, multihulls and off-the-beach dinghies. In 2026, a record 271 boats and more than 2,600 sailors and supporters took part. The event’s CrewConnect platform strengthened communication and engagement across competitors and support crews, while extensive media coverage, live broadcasts and digital promotion generated more than 1 million social media views. Beyond sailing, the event delivered a significant economic boost to the Port Stephens region.
2026 NSW & ACT Sport Professional Award - Simon Turpin
The judges stated:
Simon has made an outstanding contribution to sailing through his leadership, professionalism and commitment to growing the sport. As Sailing Manager at Lake Macquarie Yacht Club, he has elevated participation, strengthened safety and governance, and led the successful establishment of the club’s accredited Discover Sailing Centre, creating new pathways for sailors of all ages and abilities. Drawing on extensive experience managing major regattas and sailing programs, Simon has enhanced the club’s race management, volunteer development and community engagement, positioning Lake Macquarie Yacht Club for long-term success.
2026 NSW & ACT Volunteer of the Year - Gerry Brooks
The judges stated:
Gerry Brooks is a long-standing and devoted volunteer who has made an exceptional contribution to sailing in the ACT for more than a decade. Over the past year, he continued his tireless service as a Race Officer at Canberra Yacht Club, while also officiating at major events including the Australian Masters Games Sailing Competition and the Castle 650 National Championships. Beyond race management, Gerry provides invaluable support to club management through race documentation, results administration and his involvement with the Canberra Yacht Club Safety Committee. His commitment to delivering safe, fair and well-run racing, combined with his willingness to support the club behind the scenes, has had a lasting and positive impact on sailors, volunteers and the broader sailing community.
2026 NSW & ACT Team of the Year - Kairos Racing
The judges stated:
Led by skipper Cole Tapper, the team of Max Brennan, Jack Frewin, Nathan Gulliksen, George Richardson and Hamish Vass, made history in 2026 becoming the youngest ever team to win the Congressional Cup. The Congressional Cup is the world’s oldest One-Design match racing event in Northern America and has been won by some of the world best sailors. Kairos Racing is the only the second Australian team to ever win the event. Cole and his team defeated World #1 match racer Chris Poole in the Semi-Final, before going on to a dominant 3-0 win in the Final. Congratulations to Kairos Racing on this extraordinary achievement! Cruising Yacht Club Of Australia.
2026 NSW & ACT Club of the Year Category A - Lake Macquarie Yacht Club

Lake Macquarie Yacht Club has established itself as a leader in sailing participation, development and community engagement. Following the establishment of its accredited Discover Sailing Centre in late 2024, the club further expanded opportunities for newcomers through Discover Sailing keelboat programs, school sailing initiatives and structured pathways into club racing and membership. Participation has been enhanced through a vibrant racing calendar, major regattas, championship events and SheSails activities, providing opportunities for sailors of all ages and abilities to get involved. LMYC also plays a leading role in supporting sailing across the region through its involvement in key interclub events and collaboration between clubs

2026 NSW & ACT Female Sailor of the Year - Jiang Lin
The judges stated:
Jiang made history in 2025 as the first female skipper to win the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race overall. Not only was she the first female skipper to win the event, but the first double-handed crew to win Tattersall’s Cup in the history of the race. Jiang’s contribution to offshore sailing extends beyond racing. She has been generous in supporting others in the double-handed sailing community and contributing to the CYCA’s Offshore Pathways Information seminars, helping make offshore sailing more accessible to others. Congratulations Jiang on your achievement!
2026 NSW & ACT Male Sailor of the Year - Andy Green
The judges stated:
Andy is an outstanding yachtsman, navigator and meteorologist who has been instrumental in the success of the teams he has supported and raced with over the past year. Some of his results include navigating Masterlock Comanche to a Line Honours victory in the 2025 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, navigating the Hooligan TP52 to victory in the Australia Cup Tp52 and Super 40 series last season, and supporting Team Magpie in their Etchell campaigns. These achievements follow his outstanding Admiral’s Cup victory with Jolt 3 in 2025, reinforcing his status as one of the worlds leading navigators.
2026 NSW & ACT Para Sailor of the Year - Gregory Myers
The judges stated:
Gregory Myers has enjoyed an outstanding season in the Hansa 303 Single Division, establishing himself as one of Australia’s leading para sailors. He claimed the 2025 Australian Para Championship title and followed it up with victory at the 2026 Open Australian Championship, demonstrating his ability to excel against both para and open fleets. Beyond his impressive results, Gregory is a valued contributor to the sailing community, volunteering with Sailability and sharing insights and knowledge with fellow members of Dobroyd Aquatic Club.
2026 NSW & ACT Youth Sailor of the Year - Connor Radford
The judges stated:
Connor has become one of the leading athletes in Wing Foiling since taking up the discipline over 3 years ago. Connor has shown outstanding talent, drive and sportsmanship over the past year. His results include second overall in the Australian Wing Foil Nationals in January, fourth at the Formula Wing Youth World Championships in Switzerland this year, followed by fourteenth overall at the World Championship. Beyond racing, Connor is well respected amongst the Lake Macquarie foiling community for sharing his knowledge and encouraging sailors to take up Wing Foiling.
2026 NSW & ACT Lifetime Achievement Award - Bruce Davis
The judges stated:
Bruce Davis has dedicated more than 30 years of outstanding service to sailing, leaving a legacy that has shaped generations of sailors. A Life Member, long-serving Director and former Commodore of Manly Yacht Club, Bruce revitalised the club’s junior sailing program, transforming it into a thriving pathway for young sailors. His contributions extend from club governance, race management and infrastructure development to supporting international events, Sailability and the broader boating community. Through his leadership, generosity and unwavering commitment, Bruce has embodied the very best of sailing volunteerism and made a lasting impact on countless lives both on and off the water.
2026 NSW & ACT Lifetime Achievement Award - John Kirkjian
The judges stated:
John Kirkjian has made an extraordinary contribution to sailing for over 50 years, with a legacy built on leadership, safety and the fair application of the Racing Rules of Sailing. John served as a member of the Protest Committee’s at Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron throughout this time, as well as a member of the CYCA Sailing Committee for nearly 30 years, playing a pivotal role in race administration, governance and safety. John also held roles with Yachting NSW and Yachting Australia, helping shape national safety standards as Chair of the Special Regulations Committee. John’s expertise, integrity and dedication have helped make sailing safer, fairer and stronger, leaving an enduring impact on the sport at every level.
2026 NSW & ACT Lifetime Achievement Award - Dr. Stephen Wilson
The judges stated:
Dr Stephen Wilson has devoted almost three decades to advancing inclusion in sailing, becoming one of the world’s leading figures in Para Sailing Classification. As Head of Classification for Australian Sailing and a former International Chief Classifier, he has played a pivotal role in developing and safeguarding the systems that enable fair competition from grassroots participation through to the Paralympic Games. Dr Wilson continues to lead pioneering research into classification for sailors with intellectual impairment, work that has the potential to expand Para sailing opportunities and shape the future of inclusive sailing worldwide.
2026 NSW & ACT She Sails Award - Canberra Yacht Club
The judges stated:
Canberra Yacht Club has made an outstanding contribution to the growth of women’s and girls’ sailing in ACT by creating a welcoming, accessible and sustainable pathway into the sport. Through SheSails social sailing activities, a Discover Sailing Day, subsidised Learn to Sail courses for women, and a dedicated Sail Our Way youth program, the club has engaged over 100 participants throughout the year. This has led to strong retention, repeat participation and progression into further sailing at CYC. Delivered by passionate female instructors, volunteers and role models, the initiative has removed barriers, built confidence and created lasting opportunities for women and girls in sailing.
Finalists, their families and club supporters were invited to join the celebrations on Saturday 19 September 2026 at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, to celebrate all finalists and to announce the winners.
