Bungans' Holly Wawn is rising and rising in the surfing ranks, 2018 being a good steady year for the local surfer. After taking out the Vissla Great Lakes Propres. by D’Blanc at Boomerang Beach in February this year, placing a strong 5th in Grandstand Sports Clinic Women's Pro and in the top ten at Vissla Sydney Surf Pro, Holly has completed numerous events, surfed scores of heats and this week made an outstanding contribution as one of three women on the Australian team competing at the 2018 UR International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games in Japan.

Team Captain Sally Fitzgibbons won Gold and is the 2018 Women's Champion, while Team Australia is coming back home as Silver Medallists, with host nation Japan securing the Teams Gold medal.

197 surfers from 42 of the world’s best National Surfing Teams gathered in Tahara, Japan this week for the 2018 Urban Research ISA World Surfing Games (WSG). The Opening Ceremony, featuring the ISA’s unique Parade of Nations and Sands of the World Ceremony, inaugurated the competition on September 15, setting the stage for these elite surfers to showcase their talent.

“This is my first time in Japan and I am excited to experience the beautiful surf culture that this country has to offer,” said Team Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons at the beginning of the week. “Seeing all the other teams arrive creates a special energy. It makes me realise that this is bigger than just an individual performance.

“It is so motivating to come here and surf for my country. We are aiming for the Olympics, but also beyond that, trying to create a strong culture that will carry our team into the future.”

The defending 2017 Women’s Champion and Team Champion, Pauline Ado(FRA), added, “It’s always harder to be a defending champion, and it’s great to see the national teams getting stronger as we get closer to the Olympics.

“It’s an honor for me to fly my home flag and to count on the support of my teammates.”

ISA President Fernando Aguerre said:

“Two years ago, I had the honour of welcoming the Mayor of Tahara to my home in California to discuss the possibility of bringing the ISA World Surfing Games to Tahara. We are very happy that this became a reality, bringing the event back to Japan for the first time in 28 years.

“This year’s WSG is historic as it is the first to feature full gender equality, offering equal slots for men and women. The ISA is proud to continue our commitment to gender equality and display it through our actions.

“It’s the love of Surfing that has brought us all together for this global event, and we look forward to enjoying the great waves and warm, kind spirit of the Japanese people here in Tahara.”

The Mayor of Tahara, Masahiro Yamashita, said:

“We are happy that the 2018 UR ISA World Surfing Games are going to take place here in Tahara. We are welcoming people and participants coming from all over the world.

“I am sure that this competition will be the best opportunity to show many people around the world the waves, beauty, and culture that you can experience in Tahara. We are committed to taking advantage of the suitable waves for surfing to build a community where everyone can enjoy the sport and benefit from the tourism.”

Athletes have been selected based on their rankings on the 2018 World Surf League World Championship Tour, Qualifying Series or Australia/Oceania Junior Tour.

The Australian Open Surfing Team is proudly supported by the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and Hydralyte Sports.

The ISA worked closely with the World Surf League (WSL) when choosing the dates of September 15-22 as to ensure the 2018 ISA World Surfing Games did not overlap with any high-level Qualifying Series event or World Championship Tour event. In doing so, their collective goal is to encourage top-level participation around the globe by giving both QS and WCT competitors the opportunity to compete at the 2018 ISA WSG.

Given that the waiting period for the both the Men’s QS 10,000 in Cascais, Portugal and the Men’s 3,000 QS in the Philippines begins September 24, the Open Men’s division of the 2018 ISA WSG will be completed no later than September 21 to allow participating QS athletes the ability to arrive at their next destination prior to the start of competition. The Open Women’s division is still scheduled to end on September 22, depending on conditions and the length of competition needed.

Aussie Ladies Dominate Day Three Of UR ISA World Surfing Games In Japan

TAHARA, JAPAN

September 18th/2018

On a day of contrasting fortunes for Team Australia, Sally Fitzgibbons, Holly Wawn and Phillipa Anderson led the charge at the UR ISA World Surfing Games at Japan’s Long Beach today.

Fitzgibbons and Wawn have won every heat they have surfed in thus far and await their round four heats.

Phillipa Anderson was extremely close to advancing through her round three heat and nearly pulled off a miracle in the dying seconds only to fall just short.

On the men’s side of the event, Kai Tandler went down in round three as the last Australian competitor in the main draw. Tandler was then eliminated in repechage three along with fellow Aussie Callum Robson.

Young Snapper Rocks goofy footer Dextar Muskens went on a redemption mission in the men’s repechage, winning round one, two, three and four heats. His round five repechage heat hits the water late this afternoon or tomorrow.
