2026 Surf life saving NSW State Championships - SLS SNB Branch results

The 2026 NSW Surf Life Saving Championships, with Swansea Belmont surf club welcoming more than 20,000 athletes, officials, family and friends to Lake Macquarie over the course of this years States, is drawing to a close as this Issue goes to press.
Dubbed the unofficial home of the NSW Surf Life Saving Championships, it’s the first time in five years Swansea Belmont surf club hosted the largest surf sports event in NSW after half a decade at Queenscliff.
On a scale similar to that of the Commonwealth Games, nearly 6,000 athletes across Age (Youth), Masters, Open and Surf Boat Championships have contested 12 days of surf sports competition at Blacksmiths Beach, where individual and club glory are both up for grabs across the full range of surf sport sand and water events.
The first disciplines tested were the 2026 SLSNSW State Championships – Lifesaving, running February 13-15.
For many the Lifesaving Competition is the most important annual States event – it speaks to what lifesaving is all about and teams across the generations train within clubs together to keep these skills at peak. The practice saves lives as all those knowledge sets come together as the individuals and team work is tested in competition. Newport SLSC won several Golds this year across all Age Divisions, including the Open Champion Patrol.
Vice President Guyren Smith, along with current President Rebecca Cappell, have worked with a cohort of members for years, year round, to represent their clubs and selves in this discipline.
Five SLS SNB Branch clubs featured among the top 10 again this year – demonstrating how seriously local lifesaving members take their role on the sand and in the water to look after others.
Bec Capell, President of Newport Surf Club SLSC, said:
''It is great to see our whole club having success in many areas.
It is a privilege to be part of the Open patrol team. It definitely is an event that reflects what life saving is all about. I am always amazed that there is always more to learn and extend ourselves as lifesavers.''
Guyren Smith, Vice President of President of Newport Surf Club SLSC, and silver medallist overall on the Lifesaving, said:
''It is great that the club continues to shine in these events that reflect so closely our core business of keeping the public safe on our beaches.
''I would also like to note after the Summer that we have what an honour it was to be alongside the two clubs on the podium that contained members who stepped forward over recent months to respond to events at their beaches outside of patrol hours and do everything possible to make things better for those involved. A true testament to what the lifesaving community does.''

Competition kicked off on Thursday 19 February with the U9 and U10 competitors hit the sand and surf, many for the first time, to open the Age Championships. Their events ran until February 22 and included the Adaptive Championships.
All the U9 beach events ran on day one, with the Sprint being taken out by Harry Weir from Mona Vale SLSC, while their March Past Team again excelled, taking silver in that discipline.
In the water Manly LSC’s Solomon Eames, Dylan Pelly, and Benjamin Byers were too strong in the Board Relay. Manly came second overall in the Juniors comp. this year with North Curl Curl placing 8th overall. Queenscliff and Collaroy made the top 20 out of the 73 clubs taking part, which included Warriewood, Newport and Bilgola, making all these Juniors winners simply through having had a go.
Next it was the 25-26 February Masters Championships, with a large cohort from the local SLS Branch heading north to reconnect with friends form across the state while vying for a place in the records in water and sand events.
Competition culminates on Sunday 1 March with finals packages for both the Open and Surf Boat Championships.
Thanks to a commitment from the Lake Macquarie City Council, the NSW Surf Life Saving Championships will stay in Swansea for the next three years.
Mayor, Adam Shultz was thrilled to throw Council’s support behind the Championships, and by extension the Surf Life Saving movement.
“The NSW Surf Life Saving Championships bring incredible energy to Lake Macquarie and give us the chance to share the natural beauty and vibrant lifestyle we’re fortunate to call home,” Mr Shultz said.
“I’m delighted to welcome competitors, officials and visitors back to Blacksmiths Beach for this premier event
“Lake Macquarie City Council is proud to support the Championships and showcase our beautiful coastal location.
“I wish every athlete, official and spectator an unforgettable experience and look forward to cheering on the lifesavers as they compete for glory at Blacksmiths Beach.”
ClubsNSW, under the Your local club banner, continues as the Naming Rights Partner in 2026, with CEO, Rebecca Riant noting that the State Championships is the pinnacle of surf sports in the state.
“The NSW Surf Life Saving Championships is a fantastic celebration of the commitment and skill of volunteer surf lifesavers who work tirelessly to keep our beaches safe, and ClubsNSW is proud to have supported this event for more than a decade,” she said.
“Registered clubs across NSW have also contributed more than $900,000 to Surf Life Saving over the past year through the ClubGRANTS program, ensuring lifesavers have the resources they need to continue their vital work.”
Below run results from these age divisions and lifesaving competition, including some of the photos taken by Surf Life Saving New South Wales and Malcom Trees for the Surf Boats races and Shane Abrahamson for the Opens division photos.

Surf Life Saving New South Wales provides an overview of each aspect, stating:
CHAMPION PATROL COMPETITION: The aim of the Champion Patrol event is to demonstrate how lifesavers work as a team in performing some or all of the skills associated with surf rescue patrol work. Team members in the Champion Patrol event must be members of the same club, but not necessarily be from the same club patrol.
The Champion Patrol event is divided into four sections and the maximum points allocation (120 points) through;
- Physical Skills 20 points
- Surf Teams (10 points maximum) • Board/Tube Rescue Relay Race (10 points maximum)
- Theory 20 points
- Written paper (20 points maximum)
- Resuscitation 20 points
- Live Patient Assessment and Manikin Resuscitation (20 points maximum)
- Scenario Task 60 points
- Lifesaving task (60 points maximum)
Teams must complete 50% or more of the physical events and attempt all theory, resuscitation and scenario tasks in order to be eligible for a place. If they don't meet these requirements they are disqualified from the event.
CHAMPION LIFESAVER COMPETITION: The Champion Lifesaver event provides individual SLSA members with the opportunity to demonstrate in a competitive manner the physical, lifesaving and knowledge skills required of a Lifesaver.
Each competitor must provide equipment, which shall be available for use by them at the commencement of the competition: One rescue board or Malibu racing board, one rescue tube, one pair of swim fins (optional), one adult resuscitation mannikin.
The Champion Lifesaver event is determined on a point score basis with the competitor scoring the highest points being declared the winner. The total maximum points available are 120.
The three sections that comprise the Champion Lifesaver events are: Physical Skills 40 points: Surf Race, Board Race, Beach Sprint, Rescue Tube Rescue (10 points each): Questionnaire: 40 points
The theory paper section consists of 40 Multiple Choice Questions derived from the current edition of the SLSA Public Safety and Aquatic Rescue Manual. 30-minute time limit.
Resuscitation: 40 points
- Part A: a live patient assessment including lateral position (20 points maximum)
- Part B: One person CPR on a manikin (20 points maximum)
Competitors must complete 50% or more of the physical events and attempt all theory and resuscitation tasks in order to be eligible for a place, if not they are disqualified from the event.
FIRST AID COMPETITION: The first Aid competition is a team event designed to promote and to demonstrate a high standard of First Aid prowess by SLSA members in a team of two. Each First Aid competition event has a set simulated accident scenario and a set time limit for each team in the event. The time limit is advised to teams prior to the start of the event. Each event is timed based on age division: Open & U/19 12 minutes, U/17 8 minutes, U/15 8 minutes.
Teams are required to examine their casualties, make their diagnosis and then treat the casualties using the materials provided and their first aid kit. Judging at the competition is marked across five sections of the scenario with five sections equal to 100%:
- Approach to casualty 5%
- Examination of casualty and diagnosis of injuries 30%
- Specific points for all treatments 60%
- Disposal of casualty 10%
- Management of the incident 10%
RESCUE & RESUSCITATION COMPETITION: The Rescue and Resuscitation (R&R) event, in its different forms, provides the opportunity for SLSA to demonstrate in a competitive manner, the original and developing methods of rescue as well as the modern techniques of resuscitation. There are various age divisions as well as a variation of procedures and formats which are aimed at combined patrol procedures, and an introduction of the younger member into the field of rescue and resuscitation which is, after all, the prime reason for SLSA’s existence.
The various formats the R&R competition takes are:
- 2 Person: Where a team consists of two competitors – one acting as patient and the other as rescuer.
- 5 Person: Where a team consists of five competitors – one acting as patient, one as beltman and rescuer and the other three as reel and line operators.
- 6 Person: Where a team consists of six competitors – similar to 5 Person, with the sixth competitor utilising the rescue tube as an assistant to the beltman in the rescue.
For more information on the breakdown of R&R competition you can view the Competition Manual (6th Edition).

- 5 Newport 67
- 6 Mona Vale 64
- 9 South Curl Curl 48
Surf Lifesaving New South Wales report:
Around 60 athletes had bucket loads of fun as the 2026 NSW Surf Life Saving Adaptive Championships played out on Sunday 22 February at Blacksmiths Beach, with the medals won just the gravy on a day full of smiles and laughter.
Running for the ninth successive year, the Adaptive Championships takes place much like the rest of the carnival, with abridged conditions or rules to help athletes of all abilities compete to their best.
The Adaptive Championships also returned to the site of the inaugural event, with Swansea Belmont SLSC the first club to host the Championships as part of the premier state surf sports carnival.
“The youngsters and the Opens have a hell of a lot of fun here,” referee Michael Day said.
“At my club, North Cronulla, and a lot of other clubs across the state, we’re building pathways for these adaptive competitors to not just be competitors in a surf sports sense but to be competitors in the sense of getting Bronze Medallions, going on patrol, getting on the radios.
“It’s utterly awesome, I’ve spent three days on this beach, today’s my fourth, and as much fun as that was, this just beats it.
“It’s a terrific program, there’s not going to be bigger smiles on the beach than you get here. Even from the officials.”
Daniel Driscoll of South Maroubra SLSC was one of many to compete this year, picking up bronze in the U17 Male Wade, Swim, Board, and Sprint, but an incredible gold medal in the U17 Male Beach Flags.
“This event is really great, a lot of people are here and the water is so good to get in.”
“What do I get out of this? Well, the medals – I’ve trained for this, lots of hard work, and I can’t wait to keep going.
“I’m good at the flags, for some reason I just always get up faster than everybody.”
The Redhead rockstars are a crew of five great competitors from a local club to the north of Swansea, and Age Manager, Emily Price said she was thrilled to have such a great group competing close to home.
Some key results from the Redhead club included Ryder Lowe and George Cranch both collecting golds in the U10 Male Sprint and Flags, respectively, while Koby Wolfenden won bronze in the U15 Male Wade and competed strongly in the Board.
Josephine Gilard and Elyse Hall were both impressive competitors in the water and on the sand.
“We have done so well, our team did so well and tried their hardest and the club got second place,” she said.
“It’s truly amazing, I love watching these kids go round,” SLSNSW President, Elissa Hancock said, as a race continued behind her.
“They all support each other and that’s what so great about Surf Life Saving.
“Over the years more and more competitors get involved, it’s so great for the organisation to have events like this.”
North Steyne SLSC finished the day as the champion club, buoyed by great showings from Jacob Lee McLennan in the U14s, Shintaro Gilbert and Isaac Lee in the U19s, Kate Neville in the Opens, Zoe Au-Yeung and Vladimir Matic in the U13s, and Sonny Nicolussi and Ethan Au Yeung in the U15s.

Surf Lifesaving New South Wales stated:
A huge two days of competition has wrapped at Blacksmiths Beach, with the 2026 NSW Surf Life Saving Masters Championships, proudly presented by Your local club, wrapping up for another year.
Bondi Surf Bathers LSC emerged victorious once again, as they did last year, with North Bondi SLSC and Manly LSC rounding out the top three clubs on the point score.

Bondi Surf Bathers - 2026 winners
Special mention also goes to Wamberal SLSC – fourth place for the NSW Central Coast club being a huge jump from 11th place this time last year.
In fact, three other Central Coast clubs finished inside the top 10 – The Lakes SLSC (sixth), Shelly Beach SLSC (seventh), and Terrigal SLSC (ninth) – and Redhead SLSC finished in eighth place as the highest ranked Hunter club.
Bondi amassed 19 gold medals and 63 overall across the carnival, six more than the next best, with Troy Stewart (40-44 Male Swim, Iron, Rescue Tube) and Jayson Lincoln (50-54 Male Beach Flags) chief among the golds. Lisa O’Donnell also won the 55-59 Female Rescue Tube race.
Neighbours, North Bondi also managed a huge haul of medals, and leant on strong performances from Eloise Starr, Miriam Salter, and Sophie Thomson (110+ Female Board Relay) as well as Matthew Jenkins and Jacob Mitchell (40-44 Male Double Ski).
Manly’s Rachel Crerar was one a gold medallist in the 35-39 Female Ski, while Melinda Pelly won the 45-49 Female category. Pelly was also in a team with Nicole Gorton and Maddison Woodbury for the 130+ Female Board Relay gold.

SLS NSW Reported on Sunday March 1:
11 years of Newport SLSC dominance came to an end on Sunday 1 March as Wanda SLSC topped the overall club point score at the 2026 NSW Surf Life Saving Open Championships, proudly presented by Your local club.
It wasn’t without a fight – Newport closed what was a 150+ point lead coming into the final day to just over 60 with a slew of impressive individual and team event victories, but it wasn’t enough as the club from Sydney’s Bate Bay toppled their Northern neighbours.
It was a sea of gold and maroon caps crossing the finish line first on the final day of the carnival, with Newport taking out the final two events – the Open Male and Female Taplins.
It came after Olivia Clues made it four years unbeaten in the Female Ski, winning the U19 category comfortably and doing so again later in the Opens. Piper Harrison won the Open Female Iron, while Pipi Te Pania won the U19 Female Board.
For the males, Brayden Woodford won the Open Male Swim, and Charlie Verco went back-to-back in the Open Male Board race.
Wanda picked up wins along the way too; Dane Sutton was the U19 Male Iron winner, and Charlotte Bowmer won the U17 Female Swim.
For the Hunter/Central Coast clubs, there was a huge win for Jett Green from Avoca Beach SLSC in the Open Male Iron, Ashton Bone (Avoca Beach) won the U15 Male Iron, and Lexi Sutherland from Swansea Belmont SLSC was first across the finish line in the U17 Female Iron.
Kaitlyn Rees and Thomas Hall got a huge cheer from the home crowd when they won the U19 Mixed Double Ski, and Alex Walker brought the Swansea club another gold in the prestigious Saxon Bird Memorial U19 Male Swim.
The other memorial race, the Jacob Lollback Memorial U19 Male Board race was won by Dane Sutton from Wanda.
From the South Coast, Kobe Sims (Warilla Barrack Point SLSC) won the U17 Male Iron and second in the Swim and Board. Ivy Mison from Cudgen Headland SLSC on the Far North Coast won the U15 Female Board and Swim.
From the Illawarra, Darcy Stepanovski (Wollongong City SLSC) won the U15 Male Swim.
For the Surf Boat program, the Wanda weapons, swept by Nathan Spinner, beat out multi-time champions, Bulli SLSC for Open Male Gold, and the Jack Patison-swept Port Kembla Parasites won the Open Females.
Mona Vale Menace – the crew of Jasmine Sidall, Georgia Aiden, Abbey Pickering, Anabel Rulli, and James Meadows won the U19 Female category, and the Palm Beach Phins swept by Peter Spence won the U23 Males.
Across the program, crews from Queenscliff Surf Life Saving Club, Bulli Surf Life Saving Club and North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club kept the pressure on, while Batemans Bay SLSC, Avoca Beach, Wanda Surf Life Saving Club and Freshwater Surf Life Saving Club featured strongly in finals to round out a stacked top ten.
