2017 HAVAIANAS NSW GROMMET TITLES SEES AN ACTION-PACKED DAY FOR FIRST DAY OF COMPETITION.

MAROUBRA BEACH, SYDNEY
Friday, 21July 2017

The Havaianas NSW Grommet State Titles saw a big day of action, fun and solid surf as the event kicked off its first day of competition.

Duke Wrencher (Coorabell), Lennix Smith (Barrack Point) and Xavier Bryce (Mona Vale) were all dominant performers in the opening round of the Under-14 Boys. All four surfers posted two-wave heat totals in excess of 12.00 points (out of a possible 20 points) to claim wins and bypass the repechage rounds.

Cedar Leigh-Jones (Avalon) shone in the throaty beachbreak peaks, executing a variety of mammoth turns. Leigh-Jones found a handful of powerful pockets to post a decent 14.07 two-wave total to claim her first round win. After an impressive result from older sister Bodhi at the Woolworths NSW Junior State Titles pres. by Ocean and Earth, Cedar made it known she was keen to go all the way to join her sister in the Havaianas NSW Junior Team for the upcoming Surf Dive N Ski Australian Junior Surfing Titles.

The three-day event will take place at Maroubra Beach from the 21st – 23rd July, 2017.

Competitors in the Under-12 and Under-14 divisions will be vying for a revered NSW Junior Title, with the Under-14 division given an allocated amount of positions for the Surf Dive N Ski Australian Junior Surfing Titles, which will take place in Culburra on the NSW South Coast in November/December.

The Havaianas NSW Grommet State Titles will be run concurrently with the Beachbreaks Festival, which will see a range of festival activations taking place over the course of Sunday, 23rd July.

2017 is the third year the Havaianas NSW Grommet State Titles and the Woolworths NSW Junior State Titles pres. by Ocean and Earth have split into two different events, with the amendment designed to cater for the growing demand from younger competitor divisions.

In addition to the surfing, Havaianas will also host beach games twice daily, a free mechanical surfboard and an Instagram competition, where one lucky person will win a year’s supply of Havaianas.

The daily schedule will be confirmed via the event hotline at 6:45am each day. The event hotline is 0458 247 212.

All qualifiers for the Havaianas NSW Grommet State Titles were determined by eight individual regional titles, which took place up and down the NSW coastline earlier in the year.

The 2017 Havaianas NSW Grommet State Titles are supported by Havaianas, Randwick City Council, Toyota, HIF, Coastalwatch, Mothernest, Vissla, Storage King Eastgardens, Souths Juniors, Jayco Sydney, Ohana Ocean Athletics and Surfing NSW.

DAY TWO OF THE HAVAIANAS NSW GROMMET TITLES CANCELLED.

MAROUBRA BEACH, SYDNEY
Saturday, 22 July 2017

Due to hazardous conditions, Surfing NSW has been forced to cancel the second day of the Havaianas NSW Grommet State Titles at Maroubra.
After consultation with Randwick City Council lifeguards and addressing all potential options, Surfing NSW opted to postpone the second day of the event. As a result, all Under-12 divisions were cancelled, with the 14’s expected to run tomorrow to coincide with a predicted decrease in swell size.

A proposed schedule will be uploaded to surfingnsw.com.au

CHAMPIONS CROWNED AT THE 2017 HAVAIANAS NSW GROMMET TITLES

MAROUBRA BEACH, SYDNEY
Sunday, 22 July 2017

Jai Glinderman (Lennox Head) and Cedar Leigh-Jones (Avalon) have claimed coveted NSW titles after taking out the Under-14 division at the Havaianas NSW Grommet State Titles.

Due to the second day of hazardous conditions, the competition shifted south to Malabar where competitors were greeted by two-foot lefthanders.
Jai Glinderman (Lennox Head) ensured a NSW Title would be heading north, claiming the Under-14 Boys division. The powerful natural-footer synced his game-plan perfectly with the punchy lefthanders, nailing a bombardment of impressive backside snaps to post a 15.5 two-wave heat total and take the final ahead of fellow north coast native Touma Cameron (Byron Bay). All finalists have qualified for the upcoming Surf Dive N Ski Australian Junior Surfing Titles, which takes place in Culburra on the NSW South Coast in November/December.

After posting impressive scores over the duration of the early rounds, Cedar Leigh-Jones (Avalon) hit her stride in the final, posting an 11.93 heat total. In the final where all girls caught seven waves, Leigh-Jones managed to get the better of the exchange, finding playful walls to perform stylish backhand hits and claim the win. All four finalists have qualified for the Australian Junior Surfing Titles.

The three-day event took place around Maroubra from the 21st – 23rd July, 2017.
