January 15 - 21, 2017: Issue 296

Summer in Pittwater - Newport Beach

Newport Beach SLSC hosted their inaugural Castles in the Sand and Barefoot Ball on Saturday January 15th 2017.

The Barefoot Ball sold out within a short time of being listed as one of many fundraising events the club holds throughout the year with 300 people attending a great evening on the sand with tunes supplied by a 9 piece band – The United Notions.

The Barefoot Ball and Sandcastles competition has been the hard work of Newport Surf Club members Peter Tillett and Annie Finn who began working on the idea in July 2016, taking on the previous very successful Barefoot Balls and Sandcastle displays and competitions that once used to run annually at Palm Beach.

The Newport SLSC event is sharing the funds raised with Cystic Fibrosis NSW:  www.cysticfibrosis.org.au/nsw

“We have members at Newport who have cystic fibrosis and they enjoy being here. The fresh air and sea, getting in the salt water, is a great benefit for people with cystic fibrosis, so the club is thankful we can extend this even further and support Cystic Fibrosis NSW.” Peter explained on Saturday.

A great long white pavilion was in place while the Sandcastles in the Sand were being constructed with Annie Finn and a team of great helpers adding final touches. They’d been working since 5 a.m.

On the sand some wonderful creations were being sculpted out of the Newport Beach Sand. This was a family focused event and prizes were awarded to 8 sculptures and great prizes provided by local businesses.

Newport President Rob Emerson said the support from local shops and service providers is something the club is always grateful for, whether it’s sponsoring events, providing prizes or helping the club look after people on the sand through putting funds towards equipment. He also mentioned the Kinghorn Academy is going really well, with 40 training that morning.
