The Volunteer Surf Life Saving 2023-2024 Season finishes next Sunday April 28, having started on September 23 2023, with thousands of local surf club members keeping visitors and residents on local beaches safe over the past 7 months.

With more than 1.4 million hours volunteered by surf lifesavers on patrol every year, their actions are estimated to have contributed $1.6 billion economic value to the Australian community during the 2023/24 summer alone.

On March 1 2024 Surf Life Saving Australia CEO Adam Weir said: “Beaches around the country are busiest during Summer, with our surf lifesavers and lifeguards increasing their hours and services across Christmas, New Years, Australia Day as well as school holidays periods to meet the demand.

“Volunteer surf lifesavers also save more lives over Summer than any other time of the year.'' Surf Life Saving Australia CEO Adam Weir said

“Surf Life Saving Australia is grateful to all surf lifesavers and lifeguards who collectively have performed 5,176 rescues and 1,363,588 preventative actions, returning so many loved ones to their family and friends.

That number would have risen since March 1.

Surf sports allows surf lifesavers to practice and hone the skills used to save people on the beach and in the water. With disciplines such as Board Rescue, First Aid, Single Ski, Beach Sprint or 1- to 2k runs, Rescue Tube Relays, Surf Boat rowing, the First Aid Competition, Champion Patrol and the most prestigious of surf events – the Ironman and Ironwoman, all aspects of what surf lifesavers learn and undertake are included.

An IRB surf sports calendar of events takes place over Winter as these vital part of the lifesaver equipment are used throughout the Season and, more and more, as part of rescues and support during weather emergency events for evacuations.

Traditional events such as the March Past and R&R are making a comeback with an increased number of competitors taking part over the last couple of seasons and once again Collaroy SLSC has proved to be among the best at the March Past competitions this Season, as have the next generation of Mona Vale SLSC's members.

Although many of these surf sport disciplines are practised during Youth, Open and Masters carnivals within the the SLS Sydney Northern Beaches Branch Season over Spring and Summer, and thousands take part in the Surf Life Saving NSW State championships, the annual Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, the ‘Aussies’, is the one most members want to take part in at least once, or as much as they can, year after year.

The Aussies is as much about reinforcing the core focus of surf sports as it is standing yourself beside all others across Australia to see how well you can do. The Aussies brings members from Australia's 314 Surf Clubs to compete in more than 480 beach and ocean events, and makes stronger that camaraderie that stretches right along all Australian coasts simply through thousands of people from surf clubs all over the country coming together.

Run at the end of the Season, the best and brightest from local surf clubs have shone on this national stage, bringing home a bagful of gold, silver and bronze medals from the 2024 Australian Youth, Masters and Open Surf Life Saving Championships on the Sunshine Coast.

Results for those from our area show the strength and ability of local clubs being able to fulfil their commitment to looking after those on their beaches. Placings were made across most disciplines, including excelling in some age divisions. For example, in the 60-64 yrs Male Surf Race, Dave Bredeson, Freshwater, won the gold, fellow Freshwater member John de Mestre, took the silver and Tim Gates, Narrabeen, rounded out the trifecta by winning the bronze. Freshwater won the 170 yrs Male Surf Teams Final as well with Dave Bredeson, John de Mestre and John Landells leaving most in their wake.

Mona Vale SLSC's Lise Layard, Kristyn Monnock and Sophie Stokes won the gold in both the 150 yrs min Single Ski Relay and the Taplin. Mona Vale's Lisa Critoph, Lise Layard and Kristyn Monnock also took gold in the 170 yrs Taplin. Kristyn and Sophie won the silver in the Female Board Rescue and won medals in individual events - in fact, every event Kristyn went in accounted for a medal for this outstanding Masters Athlete.

Manly, which has a large Masters Team, also excelled, while Newport's Ted Smithies again won gold in the 70-74 Beach Sprint and the Warriewood Sandmen; Glen Bauder, Adam Gee, Ben Hargy and Christopher Macdonald, won the gold yet again in the men's relay, along with individual medals in beach sprints.

Manly, North Curl Curl, and Newport athletes featured among the Youth water and sand events placings, indicating local surf clubs are looking after the next generation as well.

Palm Beach SLSC's Puddles crew of Chloe Driver, Chloe Brunker, Zoe Elliot and Madeleine Julliard with Boat Captain Peter Spence as sweep won gold, completing a whole Season of back to back wins. Surely the success story of the Surf Boat Season for local crews.

The Collaroy Cannons took silver in the U19 girls and Mona Vale's McChicks rounded out another trifecta by winning the bronze. In the U19 boys South Curl Curl's Dribblers won the gold, nicely rounding out a great season for them. Mona Vale's men's junior crew, the Muppets, also made the final and finished 5th, gaining their club points.

To complement these skills, the Open Male 5 Person R&R was won by the Freshwater team of Sebastian Di Sano, Ian Donald, Patrick Kiely, Christopher Tyrrell and Hugo Weston.

Ultimately, those who travelled to Queensland's Sunshine Coast to represent their local clubs were 'having a go', even without a visit to the podium. They were joining in with meeting up with their peers and listening to and learning about their experiences in the surf lifesaving movement - all of which makes for a better club when they return home to share that knowledge with those who stayed put to fulfil the last Patrols of the Season.

This year an 'all in' Profile results list for all those who travelled north to take part in the 2024 Australian Youth, Masters and Open Surf Life Saving Championships, many of them taking all family members with them.

However, along with all those who came in the first 6 across the line in Finals, winning points for their club, those who 'had a go' in the Youth and Masters disciplines are also listed this year.

As surf life saving has creating great Australians as a core value and encouraging people to become all they can, it's good to remember that having a go can be more important than getting a go. If you try, you're already a winner, even if you don't win points or a medal. If you keep trying you are definitely giving yourself a go to do better than last time and bound to learn more, pick up new skills, and meet like-minded people along the way. So 'having a go' gets into the records here as well.

People outside the movement wonder how points are won and tallied.

SLSA states, for Aussies, the point score awarded for each Champion Club, within each event’s age category, is 6 points for 1st place, down to 1 point for 6th place. If, when the Championships have concluded, there is a tied point score, the Club with the most 1st placings will be declared the winner. Failing this, the Club with the most 2nd placings to 6th placings respectively will be taken into account to determine a winner. If, after this procedure there is no single winner, then the point score will be declared a tie and dual trophies will be presented.

Youth and Masters results do not contribute to the overall point score and there is no point score tally for the Youth Championships.

Surf Life Saving New South Wales reported:

More than 1,500 competitors from across the country descended on Maroochydore, Alexandra Headland, and Mooloolaba to kick off the Championships, with many NSW athletes looking to continue their excellent form from State Championships just under a month ago at Manly.

Josh Clark of Manly LSC were among those who went from missing the podium entirely at State to winning their event at Aussies – doing so in the U14 Male Board and the U13 Male Flags, respectively.

On the Manly club, perhaps the performers of the Championships – certainly from a NSW perspective – were Henry Whitehead and Jacob Chalmers. The pair picked up three Aussies gold medals in the team events on Sunday; one with just the two of them in the U13/14 Male Board Rescue, one with Thomas McMurty in the U13/14 Board Relay, and one with McMurty and Dylan Seymour in the U13/14 Cameron Relay.

Other results of note included Jocelyn Melbourn and Jack Stewart’s wins for North Curl Curl SLSC in the U13 Female Surf Race and U15 Male Iron, respectively, while Lisa Derz of Newport SLSC won the U14 Female Surf Race and Scarlett Hoer of North Cronulla won the U15 Female Flags.

The 2024 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships continued with the Masters Championships followed by Open athletes hitting the water for the first of five days of their competition.

Surf Life Saving Australia reported:

Day one of the 2024 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships began on the Sunshine Coast today (April 13), with the next generation of surf life savers taking to the sand and the surf at Maroochydore, Mooloolaba and Alexandra Headland.

The first day of the competition saw Youth competitors aged U13 – U15 compete in the individual events – board race, surf race, ironman, ironwoman as well as beach sprints, relays and rescue and resuscitation events.

Surf Life Saving Australia National Sport Manager Wayne Druery said: “It’s fantastic – first day of Aussies, the first of nine days, we kick off with our Youth Championships, under 13s, under 14s, under 15s racing on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, it’s great to be here.

“Last time we were here in 2021 we had just over 6000 competitors and this time we’ve topped up over the 8000 mark. It just shows you how healthy surf sports is at the moment.

“We have seen some great racing all the way from under 13s to 75+ with plenty of superstars as well as rising stars of the future,” he said.

For many of the youth competitors, this is their first experience at an Aussies, a chance to race against interstate nippers.

Her older brothers Noah and Conner Maggs have enjoyed Aussies success in recent years, and today, April 14, it was Sadie’s turn to stand atop of the dias. Maggs teamed up with her Newport clubmates to take out gold in the U14/15 Female Board Relay.

“I have a lot of confidence in my first and last paddler, so I did think we had a good shot coming into Aussies this year, it feels really great to get the win here.

“The surf is pretty good today, the waves are a bit messy but clean, perfect conditions for us.

“I have been needing to work on my starts for a while now and have been training really hard on them and I just really went for it and got our clean then just hammered it out around the cans and managed to come in with a nice gap,” she said.

And then it was the Masters turn;

Over 2000 surf lifesavers aged between 30 and 87 took part in the 2024 Australian Masters Championships over the last two days. These volunteer surf lifesavers showcased their skills and renewed nation-wide friendships at the annual competition on the Sunshine Coast.

With board riding events still to be held on Friday, Bondi SBLSC currently leads the overall point score, ahead of host club Mooloolaba and local rivals North Bondi.

Club mates banded together in the team events on day two of the Masters Championships, for some it was their first time competing together and for others it was a chance to reunite.

Former Nutri-Grain IronMan Series star Matt Poole made his Masters Championships debut, racing for his original club Queenscliff SLSC, alongside his dad Ian Poole.

“It was sort of last minute – my dad was racing with two of his teammates in Queenscliff and one of them got injured. So I got the last minute call up only a few weeks ago and here we are,” Matt said.

For Matt, it’s not only a chance to race with his dad but alongside some old rivals from his professional career.

“I’ve seen a few of the old boys that I used to race against Nathan Smith, Wes Berg,” Matt said.

“I went out for a paddle before and Smithy was joking saying you’re not allowed to warm up, that’s not how Masters works. It’s a good, fun little vibe and like dad said it’s cool to race together,” he said.

For a family that has grown up around surf life saving, Ian said it’s great to still see his son involved in not only the sport, but the movement.

“It means a lot – you look back to when he (Matt) started, he was six in the nippers,” Ian said.

“One of the best things…I’ll never forget we were at Currumbin going to do a Nutri-Grain event and he went and saved a little girl who was disappearing around the rocks.

“It just goes to show that you’re still a lifesaver at heart no matter what and it’s always very, very important to give back to the community. We’re not just running around paddling boards,” he said.

Competing at her first Aussies, Olivia Burmester from Manly won gold in Female 30-34 2km Beach Run. Olivia moved to Australia from Denmark two years ago, and has found a new community at her local surf life saving club.

“I’ve never won a gold medal before. This is my first Aussies, so I’m very excited,” Burmester said.

“I moved to Australia two years ago, joined the surf club. I did a bit of surf life surfing back in Denmark two years ago, but it’s not the same.

“Just so much fun out there. I love that a lot of it’s about the technique as well, but people are very supportive. Coming from a lot of countries, this has been the best way of just getting part of the local society and community. So I’m really grateful for the friendships,” she said.

Newport SLSC (NSW) comfortably took out the U19 Male Double Ski for the third consecutive year, with Bailey Clues and Maguire Reid bringing it home for Newport on the first day of the Open Championships, Wednesday April 17.

“We love our ski family. It’s pretty awesome. Newport has got this race three times in a row now, so it’s pretty special,” Bailey said.

“[Maguire] is just the powerhouse of it. He tells me what to do, gives me some good calls and I can feel him in the back for sure.

“We want to say thank you to our coaches, parents, family, friends, everyone who supports us, especially our coaches for pushing us over the line.”

Adaptive Competition bring new participants to the Aussies

On Saturday April 20, for the first time in Aussies history, Adaptive Competition was introduced allowing athletes from all abilities to take part in the competition.

40 athletes took part in events across beach sprints, flags, swim, board and wading, with the crowd at Mooloolaba getting into the spirit of the event.

Michael Rowlands from Inclusive Sport Design has worked with SLSA to develop the program designed to support athletes.

“There are a whole bunch of inclusive practices that have been put into the Aussies, some of them are infrastructure things like beach mats on the sand for wheelchair access, we have sensory/quiet areas for people who might need that and we’ve also helped educate officials,” he said.

2008 Paralympic swimmer Rhiannon Smith, was thrilled to be taking part in the inaugural Adaptive Competition.  A team manager with Tannum Sands SLSC, she had her nipper son on hand as her team manager for the Aussies.

“It feels amazing to be part of the first ever Aussies Adaptive competition. My journey in Surf Life Saving started with my son getting involved in green caps [nippers]… and I just saw the amazing achievements he was doing and started helping out in the club, then did my SRC, did my bronze and then this amazing opportunity came up with the adaptive events and here we are.

“I’m so happy to be a representative of the adaptive community.  We need events like this and all of the competitors here to show future generations what we can be – because you can’t be what you can’t see,” she said.

This year surf lifesavers from New Zealand clubs have competed in some events – along with a member of a club in Japan!

Wet and wild conditions greeted competitors for Super Sunday of the Aussies, which capped off nine days of racing on the Sunshine Coast with more than 8,100 competitors from around the country taking part.

The Ironman podium was an all New South Wales affair, with  Daniel Collins, known as ‘Dan the Man’ (Redhead SLSC), on top ahead of former Australian Ironman champion Kendrick Louis (Manly SLSC) and Charlie Verco (Newport SLSC).

Newport’s Pipi Te Pania and Olivia Clues dominated the U17 water events with Te Pania claiming seven medals, including three gold with Clues capturing four gold and one silver.

Newport once again claimed second on the open pointscore as well as winning the U17 pointscore, the handicap pointscore and Newport’s Pipi Te Pania claimed the coveted Female Athlete of the Carnival.

2024 saw the first time that Aussies included adaptive events and Newport’s Ryan Murphy competed and won gold in the Wade and silver in the Flags and Beach Sprint.
