2019 SAE Group Australian Surf Championships: shortboard titles

The opening day of the 2019 SAE Group Australian Surf Championships kicked off on Saturday August 10th with the Open Shortboard divisions going toe-to-toe in wedgey one-foot surf at Dreamtime Beach.

A stacked field of great athletes had gathered to fight it out for bragging rights from August 10th – 14th as the shortboarders began a two-week surfing extravaganza on the Tweed.

Tweed Heads local, perennial World Surf League Qualifying Series standout and 2016 Open Australian Champion Alyssa Lock expressed her excitement at seeing the prestigious titles unfold on her doorstep.

“It’s not too often that you get an event in your own backyard, so I’m really excited to get this competition underway,” said Lock. “I think all the competitors here will be extremely hungry to try and get a win, so hopefully I can use the local knowledge to my advantage.”

Surfing Australia Contest Director Glen Elliot indicated that contest organisers would be expecting a weekend of challenging waves, but was eager to see the roll-out of the new competitive format.

“We’re really excited to unveil the seeded format across all disciplines for all National Titles,” said Elliot. “We’re expecting some challenging conditions for the opening weekend, but we should start to see an increase in swell early next week for all the age divisions.”

The 2019 SAE Group Australian Surf Championships were officially opened with shortboard competitors gathering at the Surfing Australia High Performance Centre to kick off the entire event.

On the opening day of surfing local surfer Sheldon Simkus (Tweed Heads, NSW) showed his knowledge of north coast beach break conditions performing a mix of innovative aerial manoeuvres and powerful snaps. As a result, Simkus was awarded with a solid 15.25 two-wave heat total to leave his nearest rival chasing a near-perfect 9.66 wave score to take away his lead.

Micah Margieson (Cabarita, NSW) bagged another impressive for the local surfing contingent smashing apart his second-round heat. Margieson posted an impressive 15.50 two-wave heat total for a variety of powerful carves and snaps. The round two performance earned Margieson the Nixon Base Tide Pro-formance award for the day and made it know he’d be a threat going into the second day of competition.

Dimity Stoyle (Sunshine Coast, Qld) and Sophie McCulloch (Sunshine Coast, Qld) both made it clear they were eager to take an Australian Title back to the Sunshine Coast with both ladies nailing impressive first-round victories. Both Stoyle and McCulloch performed a handful of critical turns in their respective heats to claim the wins and earn their spots straight into the third round.

Nic Squires and India Robinson claim Open Shortboard Titles at the 2019 SAE Group Australian Surf Championships

FINGAL BEACH, TWEED
Sunday, 11 August 2019

Nic Squires (Corrimal, NSW) and India Robinson (Jan Juc, Vic) have claimed Australian Titles taking out the respective Open Men’s and Open Women’s divisions at the Australian Shortboard Titles.

After recently competing in the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, Nic Squires (Corrimal, NSW) carried his same tenacity when he attacked the Open Men’s final. Squires put on a clinic over the duration of the heat, finding punchy lefthanders that allowed for multiple backside snaps. Consequently, the 36-year-old finished the heat with two excellent scores, an 8.00 and 8.25 to amass a solid 16.25 two-wave heat total. Tweed resident and goofy-footer Nathan Cook (Kingscliff, NSW) put up a valiant fight but was unable to find the near-perfect 9.06 wave score needed to take away Squires’ lead. Squires was awarded with $1500.00 winner-takes-all purse as a result.

“This feels so good to win this event,” said Squires. “I won this event back in 2014 and when I saw the field that was in this, I knew it was going to be a really tough event. Winning an Australian Title is something that always looks awesome to have and to have my name there alongside a lot of the professionals who have won previously feels awesome. Hopefully, I can carry this confidence into the next few Qualifying Series events that I have coming up.”

Having honed her forehand on the long right-handers of the Victorian Surf Coast, India Robinson (Jan Juc, Vic) felt right at home in the punchy right-handers on offer throughout the Open Women’s final. Robinson shone in the stacked final, performing a combination of mammoth carves and snaps in the heat to muster up a solid 15.70 two-wave heat total and leave her closest rival and fellow event standout Dimity Stoyle (Sunshine Coast, Qld) requiring an excellent 8.51 wave score to take away the top spot. As a result, Robinson claimed the $1500.00 winner-takes-all purse for the victory.

“This is such a good feeling,” said Robinson “I won an Australian Junior Title a few years back, but to come up here and surf pumping waves with a crew of awesome surfers just makes it feel so much sweeter. I was really fortunate to get offered the wildcard for this event and when I found out that it was on the Tweed, I knew I wanted to make the most of it.”

Women’s runner-up Dimity Stoyle was awarded with the Nixon Base Tide Pro-formance Award for the day due to her overall performance across the event.

On Monday, August 12th, the arrival of a solid groundswell made for challenging conditions as the men’s shortboard age divisions took on solid Hastings Point walls.

Queenslander David Mcgrath set the bar early on in the day for the Over 35 Men’s division with a 9 point ride whilst Johnny Hawken top-scored in the Over 40’s with an 8.25 single wave score and back up score of 4.75 points.

Picking the right wave whilst battling the strong sweep was the key to success before lunch with former tour surfers Shane Wehner and Paul Paterson unable to register scores in their Over 40’s heat.

Former Australian Champion and Gold Coast local Mark Richardson surfed in both the Over 35 and Over 40 divisions and said the ocean dictated terms to a certain degree in some heats.

“It was seriously difficult out there and you just had to rely on Huey being nice to you really, “ said Richardson.

In the Over 50’s division, it was the Glen (Pringle) and Glenn (Valaire) show with the pair nailing down 14 and 15.90 point heat totals in round one.

Led by reigning Champion Jay Phillips, the big guns fired on day four of the Australian Shortboard Titles at Duranbah Beach as part of the 2019 SAE Group Australian Surf Championships.

Phillips put together a near-perfect heat in 2-3 foot perfect Duranbah conditions, posting an 18.45 point total that included a single wave score of 9.70 points during his Over 40's matchup. The Snapper Surfriders Club president completed a variety of critical manoeuvres from the middle peak all the way across the beach ending near ‘lovers’ at the north end of the beach.

“The Tweed Coast is my heart and soul so when I found out we were on at D’bah today, I couldn’t help but just surf in the moment and enjoy the conditions. I am so amped for tomorrow, let’s go New South Wales!” said Phillips.

Former tour surfers Paul Paterson and Shane Wehner were other standouts in the Over 40’s division, placing first and second in their second-round heat to advance to tomorrow’s finals.

Paul Snow and Shaun Gossmann sent early warning shots to their competition in the Over 35’s division posting 17.25 and 15.75 point heat totals respectively.

The Inaugural Over 50’s Women’s Final was run and won today with Sandra English establishing a big lead ahead of tomorrow’s finale. English posted a big 15.9 point heat total to put herself in a commanding position. The first-ever Over 50’s Women’s Australian Champion will be crowned tomorrow.

Round one of the Over 55’s men’s and Over 35’s women’s divisions also got underway this afternoon ahead of a huge day of action and the crowning of a whole bunch of Aussie Champions tomorrow.

Jay Phillips was awarded the Nixon Base Tide Pro-formance Award for the day after his near-perfect performance in the Over 40’s Men’s division.

Duranbah Beach played host to finals for the age division shortboard competitors today, Wednesday August 14th with a host of epic performances from former big names of Australian and world surfing.

Former ex Qualifying series shredder and Queenslander Shaun Gossmann dominated the Over 35’s Men’s Final from start to finish, posting an 18 point heat total to leave his fellow competitors in a combination situation for most of the final.

“It’s a proud moment for me. I’ve been here in Australia seventeen years now and I am so proud to be able to raise the Aussie flag and win a title,” said Gossmann.

Shane Wehner won the Nixon Base Tide Pro-formance Award and an Australian Title after a dominant performance in the Over 40’s Men’s final. The former world tour competitor built momentum through the event and hit his straps in the big dance, nailing an 18.30 point total with Jake Spooner next best with a 13.90 points.

“I really appreciate this moment, it’s been about fifteen years since I have won any kind of surfing event so it’s really nice. After sitting out at middle rock at Hasting’s in my first round heat and not registering a score to now winning the thing, it’s awesome,” said Wehner.

Former Barrenjoey High School student and North Avalon and Whale Beach surfer Col Bernasconi secured the Over 45's winner's spot while Newport's Mark Tickle took out the over 50's National Championships.

Six other Australian Champions were crowned on a massive day of competition, none more impressive than new Over 35’s Women’s champion Melissa Bartz (Pacific Palms) who wowed the crowd with several nine-point rides to rack up a huge 18.10 point heat total.

Another standout performance came in the second Over 50’s Women’s final when Budgewois' Sandra English put on a rail clinic to take down Susan Levett and legendary former Open Women’s champion Leath Goebel in the tricky Duranbah Conditions after lunch.

Champions Crowned On Finals Day At North Star Australian Bodyboard Titles

FINGAL / NSW
August 16th, 2019

Dreamtime Beach played host for the last day of competition in this year’s North Star Australian Bodyboard Championships, again providing 2-3ft contestable waves for the duration of the competition and crowning of eight Aussie bodyboard national champions.

Kiama’s Nathan Wilson was again the form surfer in the Open Men’s division and didn’t miss a beat in the final, nailing down a heat total of 15.65 points out of a possible 20 points to take the national open title an incredible three years running.

“This is the best of the three, I was really nervous this time around and coming up against these boys (fellow finalists) you always have to battle and work hard for it, so I am super stoked to take it out again,” said Wilson.

Whale Beach regular Sam Giddy had an Aussie Titles to remember, taking out both the Under 18’s Junior Men’s and Under 16’s Cadet’s divisions to prove he is the country’s alpha bodyboard grom in 2019.

The Open Women’s Final was a tightly contested affair with Britt Ladley sneaking home with a 13.75 heat total to take an Aussie Title as the tide dropped out and the wave faces steepened up.

“This is my third Aussie Title but this one’s for me. The other two were great but not as sweet as this. Last year I lost by point seven five of a point so to win this year feels amazing. I want to just give the Queensland team a big shout out, they are a great bunch of people.”

Under 14’s Grommets winner Marlon Riley who posted a heat total of 12.75 points out of a possible 20 points was another standout and new national champion.

New South Welshmen Scott Kitchen nailed down a 12.00 point heat total that included a big re-entry that scored him 8 points for the one manoeuvre to take out the Open Men’s Drop Knee title.

2019 SAE Group Australian Surf Championships: Still to Run

Australia’s best smooth style masters will finish the 2019 SAE Group Australian Surf Championships in style as all Australian Logger and Longboard divisions prepare to hit the water from August 19 through 26.

The Australian Logger and Longboard Titles have been further bolstered by the appointment of former World Surf League (WSL) Women’s World Champion Tory Gilkerson as head judge.

Once again in 2019, the iconic point breaks of Cabarita, Fingal and Hastings on the Tweed Coast firm as potential locations for the country’s best logger and longboard competitors to showcase their best work.

Toes over the nose technician and current Open Men’s Longboard Australasian Emergency Services Champion Ruben Roxburgh is keen to nail down a title in both Open Longboard and Logger divisions after runner up finishes on three occasions in the last five years.

“I have had some extremely close and widely discussed runner ups in the Opens and Logger Divisions in '14, '15 & '16 by less than half a point decision.”

“I'm excited to be back in a contest singlet after another hiatus from contests. It's been three years since I've made an appearance in the Australian Titles, and events in general. I love the Far North Coast region and there is a great variety of waves across the Tweed Coast, so finding the best conditions for the Longboards window will no doubt see us visit a variety of locations across the Tweed Coast.”

“The level of Longboard Surfing has really grown over the past few years and its fantastic to see this ISA bring the longboard world titles back. This has been a big driver for me to come back and compete, I've made the Australian Team a few times now and each time the world titles have been cancelled. It's a personal goal to represent at this level as I have done on the World Surf League (WSL) platform throughout my career.”

Roxburgh is acutely aware of the up and coming new school field he will be doing battle with on his quest for a national title.

“The new generation coming through are a testament to the future of surfing across all disciplines. The youth coming through in the sport of Longboarding have a new and fresh approach, it will be a tough event to reach my goals but with the potential locations like Cabarita, Kingscliff and even Duranbah I feel I have the knowledge and experience to go the distance this year against the youngsters.”
